Charlie Savage was born on 2 May 2003 in Leicester, England, and grew up following in the footsteps of his father, former Wales international Robbie Savage, by joining Manchester United's academy. He signed his first professional contract with the club in April 2021 and made his first-team debut in December 2021, coming off the bench in a UEFA Champions League match against Young Boys — with his father co-commentating on the game for BT Sport, making for a memorable family occasion.
After limited opportunities at Old Trafford, Savage gained valuable experience on loan at Forest Green Rovers in the second half of the 2022–23 season, winning the club's Goal of the Season award. He then made a permanent move to Reading in July 2023, signing a four-year deal. He has grown into a key figure at the Madejski Stadium, netting 12 goals during the 2024–25 season across a string of League One fixtures, and adding his first goal of the 2025–26 campaign against Stevenage in November 2025.
A technically-minded central midfielder, Savage describes his own game as more ball-playing than the combative style associated with his father. He has represented Wales at youth level from under-17 through to under-21, and earned his first senior cap in October 2023, starting in a 4–0 win over Gibraltar. Reading will be looking to Savage to continue his development as one of the club's central creative forces in League One.
