Karim Mostafa Benzema was born on 19 December 1987 in Lyon, France, into a family of Algerian Kabyle heritage. He joined Olympique Lyonnais's academy at age eight and made his Ligue 1 debut on 15 January 2005. Across four senior seasons at Lyon he won three Ligue 1 titles and was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year for 2007-08 after scoring 20 league goals.
In July 2009 Real Madrid signed him for around €35 million. Although his early seasons were a slow adaptation, he became a cornerstone of the club's golden era — first as part of the legendary "BBC" front three with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, and later as Madrid's main centre-forward after Ronaldo's 2018 departure. Across 14 seasons (2009-2023) he made 648 appearances, scored 354 goals and won five UEFA Champions League titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022), four La Liga titles, multiple Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup honours. In 2022 he was named Real Madrid's all-time second-leading goalscorer behind only Ronaldo, won the Ballon d'Or, the UEFA Men's Player of the Year and was top scorer of the 2021-22 Champions League.
In June 2023 he joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, reportedly earning around $100 million per year. He captained Al-Ittihad to a 2024-25 domestic double — the Saudi Pro League title and the King's Cup — scoring 21 league goals along the way. In January 2026, after a contract dispute, he transferred to rival Al-Hilal and immediately scored a hat-trick on debut.
For France he made his senior debut in 2007 and earned 97 caps with 37 goals. After winning the U17 European Championship in 2004, his international career was disrupted by being omitted from the 2010 World Cup squad and a five-year exile from 2015 over a blackmail case. He was recalled for Euro 2020 and won the Bronze Boot, and was selected for the 2022 World Cup squad before injury ruled him out.
Standing 1.85 m, Benzema is a complete centre-forward whose link play, vision and finishing changed how Real Madrid's attack functioned around him. With more than 500 senior career goals and trophies across France, Spain and Saudi Arabia, he is regarded as one of the finest strikers of his generation.
