Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami — universally known as Inter Miami CF — was founded in 2018 as the 25th franchise in Major League Soccer, with its first competitive match coming in March 2020. The club is a project led by former England international David Beckham, who used a clause in his Los Angeles Galaxy contract to acquire an MLS expansion team at a discounted rate, and majority owners Jorge and Jose Mas, the Cuban-American Mas brothers behind MasTec engineering. The club's pink-and-black colours, Spanish name, and Latin-influenced branding reflect Miami's bilingual identity.
The club's early MLS years were unremarkable, with playoff misses and managerial changes, but everything changed on 21 July 2023 when Inter Miami signed Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain. Within weeks, Messi led Inter Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup — the club's first major silverware, with Messi scoring in his debut and through the entire knockout round. The Argentina captain was joined by his Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and (from 2024) Luis Suárez, plus Atletico Madrid's Rodrigo De Paul in 2025, creating a Spanish-speaking core of veteran international stars.
The 2024 MLS season delivered the Supporters' Shield (the regular-season title), Inter Miami's first MLS-sanctioned trophy and an MLS regular-season points record (74). Coach Tata Martino was succeeded by Javier Mascherano in 2025. The club is set to move to the new 25,000-capacity Miami Freedom Park in the coming years; current home is Chase Stadium (formerly DRV PNK Stadium) in Fort Lauderdale. The Florida Derby against Orlando City SC is the regional rivalry.
