Aissa Mandi was born on 22 October 1991 in Chalons-en-Champagne, France, to Algerian parents. He joined Reims as a youth player and came through the club's academy at a time when Reims were rebuilding their modern identity, first as a full-back and later as a central defender with strong positional discipline.
Mandi became a Ligue 1 regular with Reims before moving to Real Betis in 2016. In Seville he developed into one of La Liga's most reliable defenders outside the traditional elite, comfortable in a back four or back three and trusted for his ball circulation. Villarreal signed him in 2021, adding Champions League and Europa League experience to a career already built on consistency.
In 2024 he returned to France with Lille. At LOSC he has served as an experienced centre-back, used for his reading of play, aerial strength and ability to organise a defensive line. By 2026 his club role is that of a senior professional whose value is less spectacular than structural: he gives coaches reliability and calm.
For Algeria he debuted in 2014 and has become one of the most capped players in the country's history. He played at the 2014 World Cup, was part of the side that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and remained involved through the more difficult AFCON campaigns that followed. His longevity links Algeria's 2014 breakthrough, the 2019 continental title and the 2026 World Cup return.
Standing about 1.84 m, Mandi is a right-footed defender who can play centre-back or right-back. He is not defined by raw speed, but by timing, anticipation and clean distribution. His style is comparable to a less aggressive Raul Albiol or a right-sided version of Nacho: a defender valued for decisions, versatility and low-error football.
