André Onana was born on 2 April 1996 in Nkol Ngok, Cameroon. He began his footballing education at the Samuel Eto'o Academy before joining Barcelona's famed La Masia system at the age of 14 in 2010. After failing to break into the Barcelona first team, he moved to Ajax in 2015, where he spent seven and a half years, making 214 appearances and winning three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cups, and a Johan Cruyff Shield.
Onana joined Inter Milan on a free transfer in July 2022, winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana in his only season at the club, and playing in the 2023 UEFA Champions League Final. Manchester United then signed him for an initial £43.8 million in July 2023, where he was reunited with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. He went on to win the FA Cup with United in 2023–24, beating Manchester City in the final. His time at Old Trafford has been marked by both strong performances — leading the Premier League in clean sheets at one point during 2024–25 — and high-profile errors that drew widespread criticism.
A sweeper-keeper known for his distribution, Onana regularly steps out of his area to contribute to build-up play and is noted for his range of passing. He currently plays on loan at Turkish Süper Lig club Trabzonspor, with his Manchester United contract still in place.
Onana made his senior international debut for Cameroon in September 2016 and has earned more than 50 caps. After a brief retirement following the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he returned to the national team in 2023.
