Moussa Niakhaté was born on 8 March 1996 in Roubaix, France, to Senegalese heritage. He developed through French clubs including Lille, Valenciennes and Metz, and his early career in Ligue 2 and Ligue 1 gave him a strong foundation as a left-footed defender.
Mainz signed him in 2018, and in the Bundesliga he became a regular centre-back, eventually captaining the side and proving he could defend in a league that constantly tests transitions. Nottingham Forest brought him to the Premier League in 2022 after their promotion.
In 2024 he joined Lyon, returning to Ligue 1 as a senior defender with Premier League and Bundesliga experience. By the 2026 cycle he was one of Senegal's leading centre-back options behind or alongside Kalidou Koulibaly, with Lyon providing the club platform.
For Senegal he switched allegiance from France and entered the senior setup during the post-2021 AFCON period. He was part of the 2022 World Cup squad and has remained in contention through AFCON and qualifying, giving Senegal a left-footed balance in central defence.
Standing around 1.90 m, Niakhaté is a left-footed centre-back whose strengths are covering space, aerial duels and progressive passes into midfield. His profile recalls Abdou Diallo in national-team terms, but with more classic stopper size and a Bundesliga-hardened defensive edge.
