Silvan Widmer was born on 5 March 1993 in Aarau, canton Aargau, Switzerland. He came through the youth system in Switzerland and developed as a right-back whose technical quality, attacking instincts and reliability made him a standout performer in Swiss domestic football. His ability to link attack and defence, contribute crosses and maintain defensive discipline gave him the profile of a modern fullback.
He progressed through Swiss clubs before establishing himself at FC Basel, where he became one of the best right-backs in the Super League. His performances earned him a move to Udinese in Serie A, giving him Italian top-flight experience. He subsequently joined Mainz in the Bundesliga, where he developed into one of the Bundesliga's most consistent right-backs — a player who could be relied upon for both defensive solidity and attacking contribution.
At Mainz he became something of a club captain figure and one of the most trusted defenders in the squad, and his Bundesliga performances established him as one of Switzerland's most consistent senior footballers of his generation.
For Switzerland, Widmer accumulated over 60 caps and became one of the most reliable senior figures in the national team's defensive setup. He was part of the squads for Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, and has continued into the 2026 World Cup qualifying cycle as one of the senior defenders.
Standing around 1.82 m, Widmer is a right-footed right-back combining consistent defensive quality with the ability to get forward and contribute offensively — a rounded fullback profile.
