Amadou Onana was born on 16 August 2001 in Dakar, Senegal, and grew up in Ghent, Belgium, where he eventually qualified to represent the Belgian national side. At 2.06 m he is one of the tallest central midfielders in European football, and his combination of athleticism, aerial dominance and surprising technical quality for his size attracted interest across the continent early in his career.
After developing at Hoffenheim's academy in Germany, he joined SV Hamburg and then moved to Lille in 2021 for around €7 million. Just one season in Ligue 1 was enough to attract a €36 million move to Everton in 2022, where his physical presence and ability to control midfield immediately stood out in the Premier League. In the summer of 2024, Aston Villa signed him for approximately £50 million, recognising him as one of the most dynamic young midfielders in European football.
At Villa, Onana has formed a powerful midfield partnership with the club's other high-quality central players, operating under Unai Emery's disciplined and tactically sophisticated system. His ability to win the ball, carry it forward and distribute accurately over long distances has made him one of the most talked-about midfielders in the Premier League.
For Belgium he debuted in 2022 and quickly became one of Domenico Tedesco's most important players. He was a key figure in Euro 2024 and has been central to Belgium's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Despite Belgium's disappointing round-of-sixteen exit at Euro 2024, Onana's personal performances were consistently strong. At 24 during the 2026 World Cup, he enters the tournament as one of Belgium's generational leaders.
His profile — long-legged, aggressive in the press, capable of driving the ball from deep — draws comparisons to Patrick Vieira as a physical template, with his own distinctive Senegalese-Belgian background shaping the determination that has driven his rapid rise.
