Deniz Undav was born on 19 July 1996 in Achim, Lower Saxony, Germany. He came through a non-traditional route into professional football, spending his early career in the lower divisions of German football before joining Beerschot in Belgium, where two prolific seasons in the Belgian second and first divisions — including a top-scorer finish in the Pro League's reserve tier — earned him a 2022 transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.
At Brighton he initially struggled to break into the starting eleven under Roberto De Zerbi with competition from Evan Ferguson and others, but scored important goals in cup and European competition. In summer 2023 he joined VfB Stuttgart on loan, and the move transformed his career. Under Sebastian Hoeneß he became one of the Bundesliga's most clinical strikers, finishing joint-top scorer in the league and helping Stuttgart to Champions League qualification for the first time in over a decade.
The move was made permanent by Stuttgart in summer 2024 for a reported fee of around €20 million. He has continued as one of Stuttgart's most potent attacking threats in the 2024-25 season, featuring in the club's UEFA Champions League debut campaign with his finishing instincts and intelligent movement that create space for teammates.
For Germany he debuted in 2024 under Julian Nagelsmann, becoming the latest in the line of Bundesliga strikers to earn senior international recognition on the back of prolific domestic form. He is part of Germany's forward options heading toward the 2026 World Cup.
Standing 1.78 m, Undav is a right-footed centre-forward whose combination of clinical finishing, clever movement off the ball and ability to link play for teammates makes him one of the Bundesliga's most effective modern strikers. His low profile prior to his Brighton move and subsequent Bundesliga explosion draw comparisons with a German version of Josh King's career arc.
