Giovani Lo Celso was born on 9 April 1996 in Rosario, Argentina. He came through the academy of Rosario Central and made his senior debut for the club in 2014, developing into one of Argentine football's most technically gifted young midfielders before Paris Saint-Germain signed him in summer 2016 for around €14 million.
At PSG he found consistent first-team minutes difficult to come by among the Parisian constellation, and in summer 2018 he was loaned to Real Betis, where an outstanding season as a creative, box-to-box midfielder earned him a permanent deal for around €22 million in 2019. He was a standout in La Liga during his Betis spell. In August 2019 Tottenham Hotspur signed him on an initial loan that became a purchase for around £55 million, one of the most expensive Argentine midfield transfers of the era.
His Spurs career was hampered by a series of significant injuries — hamstring, quadriceps — that repeatedly interrupted his rhythm and prevented him from showing his best form consistently. He returned to Villarreal on loan in January 2022 and then permanently in 2023, rediscovering form in La Liga and re-establishing himself as one of the more reliable creative midfielders in the Spanish top flight.
For Argentina he debuted in 2016 and has been a senior figure through two World Cups and multiple Copa Américas. He was part of the 2021 Copa América-winning squad and was included in the 2022 World Cup squad, though injuries affected his availability at key moments. His technical quality has never been in doubt — the debate has always been about his physical availability.
Standing 1.77 m, Lo Celso is a right-footed midfielder whose first touch, vision, ability to receive under pressure and drive through the lines profile him as one of the most technically complete Argentine midfielders of his generation. He draws comparisons to Pablo Aimar in his elegant movement and to a fitter, more dynamic version of Marcelo Gallardo in his prime.
