Born in Lisbon, Portugal on 29 July 2003, Renato Veiga came through the academy system at Sporting CP before earning his first professional experience on loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg in January 2023. The move did not fully click, and the loan was cut short after six months, but Veiga quickly found his footing at Swiss Super League club Basel, where he signed a permanent deal in August 2023.
At Basel, he established himself as one of the league's standout performers, operating mainly as a defensive midfielder while also covering centre-back and left-back. A memorable free-kick goal on his debut against Zürich earned him Swiss Super League Player of the Week and Basel's Goal of the Season award. That consistent form prompted Premier League club Chelsea to sign him for a reported €14 million in July 2024 on a seven-year contract. He contributed to Chelsea's UEFA Conference League title in 2024–25, scoring his first goal for the club in a 4–2 win over Gent during the competition's group stage.
A versatile, left-footed defender comfortable in midfield, Veiga combines physicality with strong passing range and an aggressive pressing game. He made his senior Portugal debut in October 2024 and went on to win the UEFA Nations League with the national side in 2025, also scoring his first senior international goal in a 9–1 victory over Armenia in November 2025.
Veiga now plays for La Liga club Villarreal, having joined in August 2025 in a club-record deal reported at £26 million, with the move representing a significant step up in his still-developing career.
