Shuto Machino was born on 30 September 1999 in Iga, Mie. He came through Yokohama F. Marinos' youth ranks and went on loan to Giravanz Kitakyushu (2019–20), where he scored regularly in the J3 League and won the J3 title in 2019. After joining Shonan Bellmare on a free in January 2021, he became one of the J1 League's most productive young forwards — 19 J1 matches with 9 goals in his 2023 half-season.
In summer 2023 Holstein Kiel signed Machino. The 2023–24 season produced 31 2. Bundesliga matches with 5 goals and 4 assists as Kiel earned promotion to the top flight. The 2024–25 Bundesliga debut season was outstanding: 32 league matches with 11 goals and 2 assists — top-scoring performance from a newly-promoted side's senior striker.
In summer 2025 Borussia Mönchengladbach signed Machino. His Mönchengladbach debut season has been productive: 30 Bundesliga matches with 3 goals and an assist, plus 2 DFB-Pokal matches with a goal, settling in to the more high-pressure Bundesliga side.
A 185cm two-footed centre forward with elite hold-up play, finishing ability and the work rate to lead the press, Machino has been a Japan call-up since 2023 and won the EAFF E-1 Football Championship in 2022. He scored a goal in 5 friendlies in 2025 and is a strong candidate for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad as a Bundesliga-level striker option.
