Kotaro Takai was born on 4 September 2004 in Yokohama and rose through Kawasaki Frontale's youth ranks. A towering 192cm centre-back with a rare combination of athleticism, two-footed comfort on the ball and aggressive defending, he made his J1 League debut as a teenager. Despite his age, he was part of the Frontale squad that won the J1 League in 2021 (in a youth role) and a regular by 2023, lifting the Emperor's Cup that season.
In 2024 Takai cemented his place: 24 J1 League appearances with 2 goals, 11 AFC Champions League Elite matches, 11 matches at the Paris 2024 Olympics with Japan U-23, and the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 — Japan's senior under-23 trophy. He continued as a Frontale starter in early 2025 with 22 J1 appearances and 2 more goals.
In July 2025 Takai made the major step of joining Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. Unable to break into the Spurs first team immediately, he was loaned to Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2026, where he has already made 8 Bundesliga appearances by mid-season — gaining valuable European top-flight experience.
A modern centre-back with elite size, ball-playing security and a willingness to step into midfield to win the ball, Takai made his senior Japan A-team debut in 2024 and is regarded as one of the most exciting central-defensive prospects in Asian football. With Maya Yoshida retired and Ko Itakura the senior incumbent, Takai is a leading candidate for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
