Martin Dúbravka was born on 15 January 1989 in Slovakia and came through as a professional at Žilina, where he won the Slovak Superliga title in 2009–10 and featured in all six of the club's 2010–11 UEFA Champions League group stage matches. After spells in Danish football with Esbjerg and Czech football with Slovan Liberec and Sparta Prague, he moved to England when Newcastle United signed him on loan in January 2018.
Dúbravka quickly established himself as one of the more reliable goalkeepers in the Premier League, earning the North East Football Writers' Association Player of the Year award in 2018 and Newcastle United's own Player of the Year honour for the 2019–20 season. During a loan spell at Manchester United in the first half of the 2022–23 season, he made two appearances in the EFL Cup and received a winners' medal as United claimed that trophy. He also played a key role in Newcastle United's 2024–25 EFL Cup triumph, keeping clean sheets in both legs of the semi-final against Arsenal.
A modern sweeper-keeper, Dúbravka is known for his composure in possession and his ability to play out from the back rather than simply clearing his lines. He made his senior international debut for Slovakia in May 2014 and has gone on to represent his country at UEFA Euro 2020 and UEFA Euro 2024, starting every match at both tournaments. Manchester United is his current club, where he provides experienced goalkeeping cover.
