Cristian Gabriel Romero was born on 27 April 1998 in Córdoba, Argentina. He came through the youth setup of Belgrano before transferring to Genoa in 2017, where he spent two seasons developing in the Italian second and first divisions before Juventus signed him in summer 2019 for around €26 million.
Juventus immediately loaned him back to Genoa and then to Atalanta in 2020-21, where the partnership between Romero and the Atalanta defensive coaching staff produced one of the most complete defensive seasons by any central defender in Serie A. He swept up aerial duels, engaged forwards physically in and around the penalty area, and drove out from the back with a ball-carrying directness that suggested he would become one of world football's elite centre-backs. The performances earned him a permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur in summer 2021 for a fee rising to around £55 million.
At Spurs he quickly established himself as the most important defensive player at the club. He missed significant time through various injuries but remained the first name on the team sheet when fit, forming a commanding partnership with Micky van de Ven and later captaining the side. His aggressive defensive approach — stepping out to engage early, winning headers, and driving out with the ball — made him one of the Premier League's most distinctive centre-backs.
For Argentina he debuted in 2018 and has been a regular ever since. He was part of the squad that won the 2021 Copa América and started every match at the 2022 World Cup, where Argentina lifted the trophy in Qatar — ending a 36-year wait. He was also central to Argentina's 2024 Copa América title defence, cementing his status as one of the team's untouchables.
Standing 1.85 m, Romero is a right-footed centre-back whose blend of aggression, aerial ability, ball-carrying drive and one-versus-one tenacity profile him as the archetypal modern Argentine defender. He is frequently compared to a more physically imposing Nicolás Otamendi in terms of competitive spirit, and to Diego Godín for his capacity to impose himself on the biggest occasions.
