João Mário Neto Palhinha was born on 9 July 1995 in Lisbon, Portugal. He came through the youth system of Sporting CP and was loaned out to Belenenses, Braga and Sporting Kansas City before breaking through as a senior player. He established himself as a commanding defensive midfielder during Rúben Amorim's Liga Portugal title-winning campaign at Sporting CP in 2020-21, becoming one of the most effective defensive midfielders in the Portuguese league.
In summer 2022 Fulham signed him for around £20 million following their Premier League promotion. He was an immediate success, producing a first Premier League season of such quality that it attracted major attention from Bayern München, who attempted to sign him in summer 2023. A move collapsed late, and Palhinha returned for a second Fulham season before Bayern München finally secured his transfer in summer 2024 for a reported fee of around £65 million, making him one of the most expensive Portuguese outfield players in history at the time.
At Bayern München under Vincent Kompany he has operated as the primary defensive midfielder, protecting the back four and using his physicality and tackle success to screen the defence. The Bundesliga's intensity has suited his profile, and he has been a regular fixture in the first-team squad, accumulating Champions League and Bundesliga appearances as Bayern rebuilt under their new coach.
For Portugal he debuted under Fernando Santos in 2021 and has been a regular senior international since, becoming one of the indispensable figures in Roberto Martínez's midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Vitinha. He was a key player through the 2024 UEFA European Championship in Germany and has continued in the same anchor role during the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Standing 1.90 m, Palhinha is a right-footed holding midfielder whose physicality, duelling success and positional sense make him one of the most effective defensive midfielders in European football. His tackling record and ability to win possession in tight areas draw comparisons to a more physical version of Casemiro, while his aggressive defending of the defensive line provides the protection that both Portugal and Bayern demand from their number six.
