Angus Gunn was born on 22 January 1996 in Norwich, England, the son of former Scotland and Norwich City goalkeeper Bryan Gunn. He grew up in a goalkeeping family and came through the Manchester City academy, though first-team opportunities were limited at the Etihad and he spent formative loan spells at MK Dons and Birmingham City.
In 2018 Southampton signed him for around £13.5 million, making him the club's most expensive goalkeeper at the time. His Premier League career at St Mary's was interrupted by injury and competition, but he matured significantly during a loan spell at Stoke City and later following a permanent move to Norwich City in 2021.
He joined Championship side Stoke City on loan before eventually returning to Norwich. At international level he gradually displaced senior goalkeepers to establish himself as Scotland's first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, a result of consistent club form and the natural transition as Craig Gordon and David Marshall reached the end of their international careers.
For Scotland, Gunn qualifies through his father's nationality and made his senior debut in 2018. His rise to undisputed first choice represents the generational turnover in Scotland's goalkeeping department, and his relative youth means he is likely to remain the national team's starting goalkeeper for years to come.
Standing 1.97 m, Gunn is one of the tallest goalkeepers in international football, with strong command of his area in aerial situations and sharp reflexes at close range. His size and positioning give Scotland a commanding presence between the posts as they target their first World Cup since France 1998.
