Adam Wharton was born on 2 June 2004 in Preston, Lancashire, England. He came through the academy of Blackburn Rovers, where he played alongside his twin brother Scott — also a professional midfielder — and progressed through the EFL Championship ranks before Crystal Palace signed him in January 2024 for a reported fee of around £18 million, a substantial investment for an unproven twenty-year-old.
The Selhurst Park move proved immediately impactful. Wharton slotted seamlessly into Oliver Glasner's system as a deep-lying midfielder, displaying composure and positional awareness that belied his age. He was a key figure in Palace's strong second half of the 2023-24 season and retained his place in the starting eleven through the 2024-25 campaign.
At Crystal Palace he has established himself as one of the most reliable young holding midfielders in the Premier League, winning the ball, recycling possession and protecting the defence with a maturity that had Palace supporters quickly comparing him to former England internationals. His consistency in back-to-back full seasons has been his most impressive trait.
For England he made a remarkable debut in June 2024, being called up by Gareth Southgate and immediately named in the Euro 2024 squad despite never having been capped at senior level before. He played a supporting role in the tournament and was one of the surprise inclusions in a squad that reached the final. He has continued in the squad under Thomas Tuchel for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Standing approximately 1.86 m, Wharton is a right-footed defensive midfielder whose reading of the game, timing of interceptions and ability to screen the back four make him a prototype modern English 6. He is frequently compared to a younger Scott Parker for his positioning and a tidier version of Declan Rice in his earlier West Ham holding role.
