Juan Foyth was born on 12 January 1998 in La Plata, Argentina. He came through the youth academy of Estudiantes de La Plata and made his senior debut for the club in 2016 before Tottenham Hotspur signed him in summer 2017 for around £8 million, making him one of the most sought-after teenage defenders in South American football at the time.
At Spurs he struggled to break into the first team under Mauricio Pochettino and later managers, with his opportunities limited. He was loaned to Villarreal in January 2021, and the move proved transformative. At Villarreal he played a key role in the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League triumph, playing in the final against Manchester United where he also featured in the penalty shootout that Villarreal won. In summer 2022 Villarreal signed him permanently for around £12 million.
At Villarreal he established himself as one of La Liga's most reliable right-backs, combining defensive solidity with technical ability and forward presence. His performances earned him recognition as one of the better right-backs in Spain, and Villarreal's sustained La Liga presence has been built partly around his contributions on the right flank.
For Argentina he debuted in 2017 and has been a squad option through multiple cycles. He was part of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad, though his role was primarily as a backup right-back behind Gonzalo Montiel and Nahuel Molina. The squad depth Argentina had in that position was a measure of the team's overall strength.
Standing 1.88 m, Foyth is a right-footed right-back or central defender whose height, reading of the game and ability to operate both at right-back and centre-back provide valuable versatility. He draws stylistic comparisons to a taller, more aerial version of the traditional Argentine right-back, combining European defensive solidity with Argentine technical formation.
