Jean-Philippe Mateta was born on 28 June 1997 in Sevran, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department of the greater Paris region. He came through the youth ranks of Paris FC and Châteauroux before signing for Lyon in 2016, though first-team opportunities there were limited and he moved on loan to Châteauroux and then Saint-Étienne before a permanent transfer to Mainz 05 in Germany in 2019.
At Mainz he established himself as a reliable Bundesliga centre-forward, combining physical presence with improving clinical finishing. In January 2021 Crystal Palace signed him on an initial loan that was made permanent in 2022 for a modest fee. The move coincided with his career transformation under successive Palace managers, and under Oliver Glasner in 2023-24 he emerged as one of the Premier League's most productive strikers, finishing as the club's top scorer with 16 league goals.
He has continued his strong form into the 2024-25 season, consolidating his position as Crystal Palace's first-choice centre-forward and one of the more consistent finishers in the Premier League's mid-table. His combination of physical strength, aerial ability and increasingly refined technique has made him a fan favourite at Selhurst Park.
For France he debuted in 2023 under Didier Deschamps as his domestic and Premier League form attracted international recognition. He has featured in squads through the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, providing a physically imposing alternative to Kylian Mbappé in the centre-forward role.
Standing 1.92 m, Mateta is a right-footed centre-forward whose combination of height, power and improving touch inside the box draw comparisons with a more aerially dominant version of Romelu Lukaku. He has developed into one of the Premier League's most efficient penalty-box strikers from relatively modest origins at the youth level.
