Jordan Pickford was born on 7 March 1994 in Washington, County Durham, England. He came through the academies of Sunderland and then, following the club's financial difficulties, transferred to Everton in a deal reported at around £25 million in summer 2017 — a substantial fee for a goalkeeper at the time.
At Everton he quickly established himself as one of the Premier League's best shot-stoppers, combining sharp reflexes and a commanding presence with footwork that became increasingly important in the modern build-from-the-back era. He won the Everton Player of the Season in multiple years and was part of the team that secured survival in dramatic circumstances during the difficult period of the club's ownership change and new stadium construction.
His consistency at Everton has made him the undisputed first-choice England goalkeeper for the better part of a decade. Despite periods of criticism for specific errors — most notably certain high-profile mistakes — he has repeatedly won back confidence with sustained performances over full seasons.
For England he debuted in 2017 under Gareth Southgate and has since become one of the most-capped English goalkeepers in history. He was the starting goalkeeper for England's run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals — their best result since 1966 — the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 final appearances, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-final exit. He has continued as the clear first choice under Thomas Tuchel for the 2026 World Cup campaign.
Standing 1.85 m, Pickford is a right-footed goalkeeper known for his shot-stopping reflexes, distribution range and commanding penalty-area presence. He is most often compared to Gordon Banks for his reflexes and, in terms of England goalkeeping longevity, stands alongside Peter Shilton and David Seaman as one of the defining keepers of his international era.
