Lutsharel Geertruida was born on 18 July 2000 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and came through Feyenoord's academy after earlier youth steps in the city. Raised in a football environment that values both toughness and technical schooling, he emerged as a defender able to play right-back, centre-back or an inverted role.
At Feyenoord he became a key player under Arne Slot, helping the club win the 2022-23 Eredivisie title and compete strongly in Europe. His ability to step into midfield, defend one-on-one and cover multiple positions made him one of the most modern Dutch defenders of his generation, and a later move abroad widened his experience beyond Rotterdam.
By May 2026 Geertruida is listed as a Sunderland defender in the Premier League. In that context he gives Sunderland a high-level tactical piece: not just a full-back, but a defender who can alter the team's build-up shape, support central midfield and still handle direct Premier League duels.
Internationally, Geertruida has represented the Netherlands from youth levels into the senior national team. He has been part of Oranje squads during major-tournament and qualifying cycles, competing in a defensive group with notable depth and versatility.
Standing around 1.84 m, Geertruida is a right-footed defender whose best trait is positional intelligence. He can play as a right-back, right-sided centre-back or midfield-stepping hybrid, drawing comparisons with Benjamin Pavard for versatility and with a Dutch academy version of Kyle Walker for the way he combines power with tactical flexibility.
