Rúben Diogo da Silva Neves was born on 13 March 1997 in Mozelos, in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira in northern Portugal. He came through the youth system of FC Porto and made his senior debut for the club in 2014 at just seventeen, becoming the youngest player ever to captain Porto in the Champions League and one of the youngest players in the history of Iberian senior football.
After making over one hundred senior appearances for Porto and contributing to Liga NOS and Champions League runs, he signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers in summer 2017 for around £15 million. He was the driving force of Wolves' promotions and establishment in the Premier League, playing a pivotal role in their 2017-18 Championship title win and subsequent Premier League campaigns under Nuno Espírito Santo and later Bruno Lage and Julen Lopetegui. He became one of the most cultured and technically refined midfielders the Championship and Premier League had seen from an Iberian origin in years.
In summer 2023 he made the move to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League for a reported fee of around £47 million, joining a league undergoing major investment with high-profile players across positions. At Al-Hilal he has been a central figure in the club's title-winning campaigns, operating as the senior creative anchor and contributing across Champions League play and domestic competition in a squad that includes multiple international team-mates.
For Portugal he debuted in 2017 and has been a long-standing senior international with over sixty caps, appearing at the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020 and 2022 World Cup, and continuing under Roberto Martínez's tenure through the 2024 European Championship and the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Standing 1.82 m, Rúben Neves is a right-footed central midfielder whose range of passing, vision and dead-ball ability draw comparisons to a more polished, technical version of Deco in his Porto years. His ability to dictate tempo from deep positions, combined with a long-range strike that has produced several memorable Premier League goals, established him as one of the defining midfielders of his Portuguese generation.
