Theo Hernández was born on 6 October 1997 in Marseille, France, the younger brother of fellow defender Lucas Hernández. He came through the youth academies of Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, and after loan spells at Deportivo Alavés — where his attacking left-back play attracted wide attention in La Liga — and Real Sociedad, he signed permanently for AC Milan in summer 2019 for around €25 million.
At Milan he underwent a career transformation that made him one of the world's best attacking left-backs. Under Stefano Pioli and successive coaches he delivered consistently outstanding performances across five seasons, helping the club win the 2021-22 Serie A title — their first in eleven years — and emerge as a top-four Serie A contender in subsequent seasons. He contributed regularly with goals and assists from left-back, a statistical output that placed him among the most productive defenders in European football.
In summer 2024 he joined Bayer Leverkusen for a significant fee following Milan's failure to extend his contract. At Leverkusen — winners of the 2023-24 Bundesliga under Xabi Alonso — he has continued as a high-output attacking left-back, adding German football's top league to his impressive CV and working alongside a squad that includes top-end European talent.
For France he debuted in 2019 and has since become the first-choice left-back under Didier Deschamps, ahead of Lucas Digne and others. He appeared at UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup final — in which France lost on penalties to Argentina — and UEFA Euro 2024, and is the undisputed first-choice left-back as France enters the 2026 World Cup.
Standing 1.84 m, Theo Hernández is a left-footed full-back whose combination of pace, power, directness in attack and improving defensive maturity make him arguably the best attacking left-back in the world. His goal-scoring from deep and overlapping speed draw comparisons with Roberto Carlos at his peak, while his physicality and delivery in the final third add a dimension that puts him in a category of his own.
