Dário Essugo was born on 14 March 2005 in Odivelas, in the Lisbon metropolitan area of Portugal, and joined Sporting CP's academy at the age of nine. He signed his first professional contract in March 2021 and, just four days later, made his Primeira Liga debut as a substitute against Vitória de Guimarães — becoming Sporting's youngest-ever first-team debutant at 16 years and six days. Later that year, he also became Portugal's youngest player to appear in the UEFA Champions League, stepping off the bench against Ajax at just 16 years and 268 days.
After loan spells at Chaves and Las Palmas, where he gained valuable top-flight minutes in Portugal and Spain respectively, Essugo completed a permanent move to Chelsea in March 2025 for a reported £18.5 million. He made his debut for the club at the FIFA Club World Cup that summer and was part of the squad that won the tournament, adding a third league title with Sporting CP (2020–21, 2023–24, 2024–25) to his honours list.
A composed, technically assured central midfielder, Essugo reads the game well and is comfortable progressing play in tight spaces. Chelsea will be looking for him to develop into a regular first-team contributor as he enters his peak development years.
At international level, Essugo represented Portugal at the 2022 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, scoring in the quarter-final against France. He earned his first under-21 cap in September 2023, aged just 18, in a 3–0 win over Andorra.
