Malo Gusto was born on 19 May 2003 in Décines-Charpieu, near Lyon, France. He developed through the Lyon academy, joining as an under-14 and working his way through the youth ranks before signing his first professional contract in December 2020. He made his senior debut for Lyon in January 2021 and went on to make over 50 Ligue 1 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a regular starter and becoming the youngest defender to start a Ligue 1 match for Lyon since Samuel Umtiti.
In January 2023, Chelsea signed Gusto on a deal running until 2030, with Lyon reporting the fee at €30 million plus €5 million in bonuses. He was loaned back to Lyon to finish the 2022–23 season before joining Chelsea's first team. At Chelsea, he has been deployed both as a right-back and in a more advanced midfield role. A notable individual milestone came on 8 November 2024, when he scored his first Chelsea goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers, ending a run of 165 games without a goal. He was part of the Chelsea squad that won the UEFA Conference League in 2024–25 and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
An agile, attack-minded right-back with sharp acceleration, Gusto represents France at international level, having made his senior debut for Les Bleus in October 2023 against the Netherlands, coming off the bench as France clinched UEFA European Championship qualification with a 2–1 victory. Chelsea continue to rely on him as a key option down their right flank.
