Robert Lynch Sánchez was born on 18 November 1997 in Cartagena, in the Murcia region of Spain. After coming through youth football locally and spending time at Levante's academy, he moved to England at the age of 15 to join Brighton & Hove Albion, signing his first professional contract in 2015. Loan spells at Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale gave him his early senior experience before he broke into Brighton's first team in November 2020.
Sánchez established himself as Brighton's number one and was part of their strongest Premier League era, including a notable clean sheet in the 4–0 win over Manchester United in May 2022. He also kept a clean sheet in a FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United in 2023, though Brighton were eventually eliminated on penalties.
In August 2023 he joined Chelsea in a deal worth up to £25 million, signing a seven-year contract. His most significant honour came in July 2025 when he helped Chelsea win the FIFA Club World Cup, making several key saves in a 3–0 final victory over Paris Saint-Germain, earning him the tournament's Golden Glove award. He also collected a UEFA Conference League winner's medal in 2024–25.
A composed, distribution-focused goalkeeper who has cited Iker Casillas and David de Gea as his models, Sánchez is Chelsea's first-choice keeper despite facing competition for the position. For Spain, he made his senior international debut in September 2021 and has earned three caps, having also represented his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
