Enzo Fernández was born on 17 January 2001 in San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He joined River Plate's academy as a young child and progressed through their youth ranks before earning a first-team promotion in January 2019. A loan spell at Defensa y Justicia proved pivotal — he started in their 3–0 victory over Lanús in the 2020 Copa Sudamericana final, claiming his first major title. He returned to River Plate in 2021, quickly becoming a starter and registering eight goals and six assists in 19 games during the 2022 season, which attracted significant interest from European clubs.
In July 2022, he moved to Benfica, where he was named the Primeira Liga's Midfielder of the Month on three separate occasions. His performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup — where Argentina won their third title and Fernández was awarded the tournament's Young Player Award — raised his profile further. Chelsea signed him in January 2023 for a British-record fee of £106.8 million on an eight-and-a-half-year contract. He has since added a UEFA Conference League winner's medal (2025) and a FIFA Club World Cup winner's medal (2025) with the club.
A versatile central midfielder who operates primarily as a deep-lying playmaker, Fernández is known for his passing range, press resistance, and ability to break defensive lines. Chelsea see him as a key figure in their midfield for the foreseeable future.
Fernández made his senior Argentina debut in September 2022 and went on to win both the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América with the national side.
