José Sá — full name José Pedro Malheiro de Sá — was born on 17 January 1993 in Braga, in the Minho region of northern Portugal. He came through the youth system of Porto and was loaned out to Estoril and Paços de Ferreira before spending several seasons on loan at Greek club Olympiacos, where he eventually signed permanently and became one of the most dominant goalkeepers in the Greek Super League.
He won multiple Super League titles and Greek Cups with Olympiacos, establishing himself as an elite-level performer in European competition. His performances in the Europa League — where Olympiacos had notable continental runs — earned him recognition beyond Greece, and in summer 2021 Wolverhampton Wanderers signed him for around £6.5 million following their relegation avoidance.
At Wolves he was an immediate success, producing strong Premier League seasons across 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24. He was widely considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League during this period, making a high number of high-difficulty saves that kept Wolves competitive despite limited resources. His career at Wolves continued into the 2024-25 Premier League season, where he remained the number one despite the club's managerial changes and mid-table Premier League position.
For Portugal he made his senior debut in 2021 and has been a regular squad member, generally serving as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Diogo Costa. He featured in the 2024 UEFA European Championship as backup and has continued in the squad through the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, providing valuable competition for the first-choice position.
Standing 1.93 m, José Sá is a right-footed goalkeeper whose reflexes, shot-stopping ability and aerial command make him one of the top-quality goalkeepers in the Premier League. His record of high-difficulty saves at Wolves during his best seasons drew comparisons to a more flamboyant version of Pepe Reina in his prime, combining classical shot-stopping with an occasionally spectacular, instinctive style.
