The Red Tide is back on the World Cup stage. Eight years after Panama's unforgettable debut in Russia, La Marea Roja return to the tournament with a bigger target: not just to be there, but to chase a first-ever World Cup win. In Group L with England, Croatia and Ghana, Panama arrive as outsiders with energy, bite and a nation ready to believe again.

Panama's defining football night came in October 2017. A final-day win over Costa Rica sent them to Russia 2018, their first World Cup, and Roman Torres' late winner became a national memory. The celebration was so big that the next day was declared a holiday.
Russia was tough: Belgium, England and Tunisia made for a brutal debut group, and Panama lost all three matches. But Felipe Baloy's goal against England was the country's first at a World Cup, a moment that mattered far beyond the scoreline.
Since then, Panama have made sure 2018 was not a one-off. They reached the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup final, showed further growth in major regional competition, and under Thomas Christiansen have become one of Central America's most awkward, competitive sides. The 2026 World Cup is their chance to turn that progress into a result the world can see.
Panama are built on discipline, work rate and transition. They are not coming to dominate the ball for long stretches against the giants of Group L. Their path is to stay compact, absorb pressure, win duels, and break forward quickly when the moment opens.
Adalberto Carrasquilla gives the midfield its rhythm and edge, while Michael Murillo and Cesar Blackman can add drive from wide areas. In attack, Ismael Diaz is one of the names Panama will look to for sharp movement and the finishing touch. Against stronger opponents, the margins will be thin: set pieces, counterattacks and concentration through long defensive spells could decide everything.
Adalberto Carrasquilla, the heartbeat of midfield. He receives under pressure, carries the ball forward and competes without flinching, giving Panama the link they need between survival and ambition. If the Red Tide are going to trouble elite opponents, much of it will start at his feet.
Panama open against Ghana on 17 June, face Croatia on 23 June, and close against England on 27 June.
Panama are clear underdogs in Group L. England and Croatia carry far greater World Cup pedigree, while Ghana are dangerous enough to punish any loose spell. But the expanded 48-team format gives the best eight third-placed teams a route into the knockout stage. If Panama can take something from Ghana and stay alive against Croatia or England, a first World Cup win could become the spark for something bigger.
Because the tournament is in North America, Panama's group matches land in the morning in Japan. The Ghana opener is set for 8:00 a.m. JST on 18 June, followed by Croatia at 8:00 a.m. JST on 24 June and England at 6:00 a.m. JST on 28 June. Add Panama's fixtures to your calendar so the early kickoffs do not slip past you.
