The European champions arrive with a new golden generation and the mood around La Roja is electric. Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi and Rodri give Spain the kind of talent that makes every possession feel loaded with possibility. After the 2010 breakthrough in South Africa, 2026 is about chasing the second star.
For decades, Spain carried the tag of a team rich in talent but short of the final step. They first reached the World Cup in 1934, finished fourth in 1950, and hosted the tournament in 1982, yet the summit stayed just out of reach.
Then came the tiki-taka golden age. From 2008 to 2012, Spain turned control of the ball into control of entire tournaments: EURO 2008, the 2010 World Cup and EURO 2012 arrived in a historic run of three straight major titles. Andrés Iniesta's extra-time goal against the Netherlands in Johannesburg gave Spain their first World Cup and changed the country's football story forever.
The years after that brought a group-stage exit in 2014 and earlier-than-hoped knockout defeats in 2018 and 2022. But under Luis de la Fuente, Spain have surged again. They won the 2023 UEFA Nations League, then beat England 2-1 in the EURO 2024 final to claim a record fourth European crown. Now Yamal, Pedri and the new wave are trying to turn that European dominance into another World Cup era.
Spain are still built on possession and technical security, but this is not a museum piece version of tiki-taka. De la Fuente's side keep the ball with purpose, press aggressively, attack with width and accelerate quickly once they open a passing lane.
Pedri gives the midfield rhythm, Gavi adds bite and forward thrust, and Rodri anchors the whole structure when he is available and sharp. His condition after injury should be watched carefully, but at his best he gives Spain elite control. Add Yamal's one-v-one magic on the right and La Roja become one of the most exciting teams in the tournament.
Lamine Yamal is the brightest young attacking talent in world football and the player who can make Spain's possession explode. When he receives on the right, every defender has to prepare for the dribble, the disguised pass or the finish.
Pedri is the genius who operates Spain's midfield. He finds space where there appears to be none and gives La Roja's possession its tempo, direction and calm.
Gavi brings fire and vertical energy to a team already rich in technique. His duels, pressing and forward runs give Spain a sharper edge.
Rodri is a Ballon d'Or-level anchor and one of the defining midfielders of his generation. Spain will monitor his rhythm and condition after injury, but if he is close to full speed, their ceiling rises dramatically.
Spain open against Cape Verde on 15 June, face Saudi Arabia on 21 June, and close against Uruguay on 26 June.
Spain are the clear favorites in Group H. With the eight best third-placed teams also moving on, the margin for survival is wider than before, but the standard for La Roja is higher than survival. Win the first two, then take first place against Uruguay — that is the path a European champion should be targeting.
Because the tournament is in North America, Spain's kickoffs mostly land late at night or early in the morning in Japan. The Cape Verde opener is scheduled for 1:00 a.m. JST on 16 June, with the Saudi Arabia match also at 1:00 a.m. and Uruguay at 9:00 a.m. Subscribing to Spain's fixtures is the easiest way to avoid missing the new golden generation.
