Alphonse Areola was born on 27 February 1993 in Paris, France, to a family of Filipino heritage. He joined Paris Saint-Germain's academy as a child and grew through one of France's most demanding goalkeeper schools, learning alongside several future internationals before making his senior breakthrough through loan spells rather than a direct path into the PSG first team.
His middle career was defined by carefully chosen loans and title-winning environments. He won Ligue 2 with Lens, impressed at Bastia, then became Villarreal's first-choice goalkeeper in La Liga. A return to PSG brought domestic trophies, and further spells at Real Madrid and Fulham gave him Champions League, La Liga and Premier League experience. At Real Madrid he was part of the squad that won the 2019-20 league title, even if minutes were limited.
West Ham United first signed him on loan in 2021 and later made the move permanent. He was central to the club's 2022-23 UEFA Europa Conference League campaign, saving important moments during the run that ended with West Ham's first European trophy in decades. Since then he has been one of the senior goalkeepers in east London, valued for his calm temperament and European experience.
For France he has been part of the national setup for many years, winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup as a squad goalkeeper and remaining involved during later cycles behind Hugo Lloris and Mike Maignan. His international appearances have been limited, but his role has often been that of a trusted, low-maintenance goalkeeper who understands tournament environments.
Standing about 1.95 m, Areola is a right-footed goalkeeper with long reach, smooth reflexes and a composed approach to crosses. He is not as aggressive as Manuel Neuer, but his frame and calm shot-stopping profile invite comparison with a more understated Hugo Lloris in the way he can make difficult saves look controlled.
