Mateus Fernandes was born on 10 July 2004 in Olhão, Portugal, and developed in Sporting CP's academy. Sporting's midfield school gave him a strong technical foundation, and he advanced through the youth levels as a midfielder capable of carrying the ball, combining quickly and playing with maturity beyond his age.
His middle development included senior exposure in Portugal and a loan spell designed to give him regular first-team rhythm. At Estoril and around Sporting's senior group he showed the qualities of a modern number eight: press resistance, forward passing and the energy to cover ground. Those performances made him attractive to clubs looking for young midfield value.
West Ham United signed him as a technically gifted midfielder with room to grow in the Premier League. In east London he is adapting to the physical intensity of English football while offering qualities the squad needs: clean progression, midfield mobility and the confidence to receive under pressure.
For Portugal he has represented youth national teams and belongs to a deep generation of technically strong midfielders. Senior selection is highly competitive, so he is not yet an established full international, but his route remains open if his Premier League development accelerates.
Standing around 1.78 m, Mateus Fernandes is a right-footed central midfielder who can play as an eight or a deeper passer. His style invites comparison with João Moutinho in broad Portuguese terms: compact, intelligent, secure in possession and able to keep midfield rhythm without needing constant highlights.
