Alex Meret was born on 22 March 1997 in Udine, Italy, and progressed through Udinese's academy. He made his senior debut in the Coppa Italia in December 2015 and spent two seasons on loan at Serie B side SPAL (2016-2018), where he helped them win promotion in 2016-17 and was named the league's best young goalkeeper.
In July 2018 Napoli signed him for around €35 million. After initially sharing duties with David Ospina, he established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper and produced one of the defining moments of his career by saving Paulo Dybala's penalty in the 2020 Coppa Italia final shoot-out victory over Juventus. He has since won the 2022-23 and 2024-25 Serie A titles — the first ending Napoli's 33-year Scudetto drought — plus the 2025-26 Supercoppa Italiana.
For Italy he was capped at every youth level from U16 to U21 and made his senior debut in November 2019. He was part of the squad that won Euro 2020, although he did not appear in any match during the tournament. In 2021 he was made a Cavaliere of the Italian Republic.
A 1.91 m goalkeeper with strong reflexes, line dominance and a calm temperament, Meret is at the centre of Napoli's defensive identity and has been recognised as part of UEFA's Champions League Breakthrough XI.
