David Neres Campos was born on 3 March 1997 in São Paulo, Brazil, and progressed through São Paulo FC's youth academy from 2007. In January 2017 he joined Ajax for around €12 million, and during the famous 2018-19 season he was instrumental as Ajax reached their first Champions League semi-final in 22 years and won the Eredivisie/KNVB Cup double. Injuries hampered subsequent seasons.
In January 2022 he joined Shakhtar Donetsk, but left Ukraine that February following the Russian invasion. In June 2022 Benfica signed him, and he won the Portuguese Primeira Liga in his debut season. In August 2024 Napoli signed him on a long-term contract.
In his first Italian season he won the 2024-25 Serie A title, and in December 2025 he scored twice in the Supercoppa Italiana final win over Bologna. He wears the number 7 shirt.
Internationally, Neres earned his first senior Brazil call-up in March 2019 and was part of the squad that won the 2019 Copa América. He has continued to be considered for Seleção squads.
A 1.75 m winger comfortable on either flank but most often used on the right, Neres combines pace, close control, dribbling and a low centre of gravity, providing the kind of one-on-one threat Napoli have wanted to have on the bench at the very least.
