Virgil van Dijk was born on 8 July 1991 in Breda, Netherlands, and rose through Groningen's youth system, making his Eredivisie debut in 2011. After two impressive seasons at the Dutch club, he moved to Celtic in 2013 for around €3 million, where he won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles (2013–14, 2014–15) and the Scottish League Cup. In September 2015 Southampton signed him for €15 million, and in January 2018 Liverpool made him the world's most expensive defender at the time at around €84.5 million.
At Liverpool, Van Dijk transformed the club's defensive identity. He has lifted the UEFA Champions League (2018–19), the Premier League (2019–20 and 2024–25), the FA Cup, multiple EFL Cups, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The 2024–25 season was particularly remarkable, with Liverpool reclaiming the Premier League and Van Dijk again leading the back line. His 2025–26 form has remained imperious: 35 Premier League appearances with 4 goals and 12 UEFA Champions League matches with 2 goals and 3 assists by mid-season.
A 195cm composed centre-back with elite recovery pace, ball-playing security and aerial dominance, Van Dijk is the undisputed captain of the Netherlands national team. He has led the Oranje at the 2024 European Championship and is the central figure of the Dutch back line heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is regarded as one of the greatest centre-backs of his generation worldwide.
