Cristiano Ronaldo will be 41 at the 2026 World Cup. He has scored more international goals than any player in football history (140+). He has won 5 Champions Leagues, 7 league titles across three countries, 5 Ballon d''Ors. His career is the largest body of work in football history by sheer volume — 900+ senior goals, 1,200+ matches. Here are the chapters that built it.
Discovered as a 17-year-old at Sporting CP youth. Made first-team debut at 17. Featured in a friendly against Manchester United that summer — United directors decided on the spot to sign him.
Inherited the famous No. 7 from David Beckham. Took four years to become elite. By 2007-08, he was the Champions League and Ballon d''Or winner. Scored 118 goals in 292 matches. Sold to Real Madrid in 2009 for a then-world-record €94m.
The most prolific scoring period in football history. 450 goals in 438 matches. 4 Champions League titles in 5 seasons (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018). Three back-to-back Ballon d''Ors (2016-17, 2017-18 felt earned). His Real Madrid years redefined what was statistically possible.
The Italian chapter. 101 goals in 134 matches. Two Serie A titles. Less Champions League success than expected — Juventus failed to advance past the round of 16 twice. Ended on a sour transfer back to United.
A failed reunion. United wasn''t ready for him; he wasn''t ready for diminished minutes. Ended in a Piers Morgan interview that effectively expelled him from European football.
The Saudi Pro League era. Highest annual salary in football. Still scoring 30+ goals per season. Often ridiculed in Europe but is genuinely happy + healthy. Career extension by half a decade.
220+ caps. 140+ goals. EURO 2016 winner (his only major international trophy). Two World Cup quarter-finals (2006, 2022). The 2026 question is whether he can still help at 41.
Even his detractors admit:
His and Messi's careers defined football for 20 years. 2026 is the closing chapter for both.
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on 5 February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. He joined Sporting CP's youth academy in 1997, then signed for Manchester United in August 2003 for £12 million — a record fee for a teenager in England at the time. Across six seasons at Old Trafford he won three Premier League titles and the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League, claiming his first Ballon d'Or.
A 2009 transfer to Real Madrid for around €94M defined the next decade. He won four CL titles between 2014 and 2018 and added four further Ballon d'Or awards (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017). His December 2022 move to Al-Nassr (reported salary around €200M/year) was the highest in football history at the time, and his 2023-24 + 2024-25 Saudi Pro League Golden Boots made him the first player in football history to top the scoring chart in four different leagues.
For Portugal, Ronaldo has captained the side since 2008 and is the most-capped male international in football history with around 226 caps and 143+ goals — also the all-time leading male international goalscorer.
