Danilo Luiz da Silva was born on 15 July 1991 in Bicas, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He came through the youth setup of América Mineiro before signing for Santos as a teenager, where he played alongside Neymar in the side that won the 2011 Copa Libertadores at just nineteen years old.
In summer 2011 Porto signed him, and his three Portuguese seasons culminated in a 2014-15 Primeira Liga title and a move to Real Madrid in summer 2015 for around €31 million. He spent two seasons with Real Madrid, winning back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles in 2016 and 2017, before transferring to Manchester City and then Juventus in summer 2019.
At Juventus across four and a half seasons he became a defensive leader and frequent captain, eventually transitioning from his original right-back role to senior centre-back. He won Serie A and Coppa Italia honours and captained the club during the transitional period after Giorgio Chiellini's departure. In January 2025 he joined Flamengo on a free transfer, returning to Brazil to anchor the defensive line.
For Brazil he debuted in 2011 and is one of the country's most-capped defenders, appearing at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the 2016 Copa América Centenario and the 2019, 2021 and 2024 editions of the tournament. He frequently captained the national team after Thiago Silva's senior departure and remains a senior figure as he approaches his mid-thirties.
Standing 1.84 m, Danilo is a right-footed defender whose blend of versatility (right-back or centre-back), tactical intelligence and leadership inside the dressing room marked him out throughout the 2010s. He combines the calm reading of a senior centre-back with the residual right-back's stamina, drawing stylistic comparisons with a more refined Maicon at a similar age.
