Douglas dos Santos Justino de Melo was born on 22 March 1994 in Cariacica, in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. He came through the youth setup of Vitória and made his senior debut for the club in 2013 before transferring to Udinese in summer 2014, where he initially struggled to settle in Italy.
In summer 2016 Hamburger SV signed him, and his three-and-a-half Bundesliga seasons reignited his career as a senior left-back. In summer 2019 Zenit Saint Petersburg bought him for around €12 million, and the Russian move ended up being the defining one of his career.
At Zenit he has won six Russian Premier League titles back-to-back, multiple Russian Cups, and become one of the longest-serving foreign players in the modern Russian top flight. The club's continued Russian-league dominance has been built around a defensive core in which he is the senior figure, regularly wearing the captain's armband.
For Brazil he won gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics — the country's first men's football Olympic gold — and was a member of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold-medal squad as an over-age player. He has appeared in senior squads through the 2024 Copa América and the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, providing cover at left-back.
Standing 1.74 m, Douglas Santos is a left-footed full-back whose acceleration over short distances, defensive solidity and dead-ball delivery have made him a Russian Premier League fixture for half a decade. He profiles as a more compact, possession-based version of Marcelo, prioritising secure positioning over the most attacking incursions.
