Grant Hanley was born on 20 November 1991 in Dumfries, Scotland. He came through the Blackburn Rovers academy and made his senior debut at Ewood Park, establishing himself as a no-nonsense central defender with strong aerial ability and a combative approach to the game. He spent the majority of his club career in the English Championship.
After time at Blackburn, he moved to Newcastle United in 2016 for a reported fee of around £5.5 million, though his time at St James' Park coincided with a difficult period for the club. He subsequently moved to Norwich City in 2017, where he became a long-standing figure in the club's defence through multiple promotions and relegations between the Premier League and Championship.
His association with Norwich stretched over several years, making him one of the most experienced defenders in the Championship. He served as club captain and was a vocal leader in the dressing room, a role that translated to the international stage.
For Scotland he debuted in 2015 and became a senior centre-back option under Steve Clarke, bringing experience and aerial dominance to a defence that has increasingly relied on younger talent. He played a role in Scotland's Euro 2020 qualification campaign.
Standing 1.88 m, Hanley is a physically imposing central defender whose primary strengths are aerial duels, aggressive defending and organisational leadership. He is a classic Championship-quality defender whose club and international experience has made him a trusted option when Scotland need experience at the back.
