Daiki Sekine was born on 11 August 2002 in Shizuoka and rose through the Kashiwa Reysol academy. A tall (187cm) and athletic right-sided defender, he made his J1 debut as a teenager and quickly became one of the brightest defensive prospects in Japan. In 2024 he played 31 J1 League matches as a regular for Reysol and was a key part of the Japan U-23 side at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Japan reached the quarter-finals.
He also won the AFC U23 Asian Cup with Japan U-23 in 2024 — a Paris 2024 qualifying tournament — where his composure and physicality stood out as a 21-year-old centre-back/right-back hybrid.
In January 2025 Sekine made the European move to France with Stade de Reims. His transition has been smooth: 18 Ligue 1 matches in the second half of the 2024–25 season followed by 23 Ligue 2 appearances after Reims' relegation in 2025–26, plus a Coupe de France goal. Playing in a possession-oriented French side has helped him develop the ball-playing side of his game.
A modern right-sided defender with the height and athleticism of a centre-back but the mobility of a wing-back, Sekine made his Japan A-team debut in 2025 and is one of the most exciting young defenders in the Japan setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
