Junnosuke Suzuki was born on 12 July 2003 in Gifu, Japan, and came through the Shonan Bellmare youth ranks. He made his J1 League debut in 2022 and broke through to the senior side properly in 2024 with 23 league appearances at centre-back. The combination of intelligent reading, comfortable distribution from defence and good athleticism marked him out as one of the brightest young defenders in the J1 League.
In July 2025 Suzuki took the major step of joining FC Copenhagen of Denmark's Superliga. His adjustment to European football has been outstanding: 19 Superliga appearances and a goal in the second half of 2025, plus 7 UEFA Champions League appearances with an assist — making him one of the youngest Japanese defenders ever to feature regularly in the UCL group stage. Notably, he also continued to feature for Shonan Bellmare in J1 across the first half of 2025 before the summer move, putting him in the unusual position of having top-flight starts in two countries in the same calendar year.
A modern centre-back who can play in a back four or as the left-sided centre-back of a back three, with the pace to defend high lines and the technical security to play out from the back, Suzuki has emerged as a major prospect.
He earned his Japan A-team debut in 2025 and started multiple friendlies. With his Champions League experience and his positional versatility, he is expected to feature prominently in Japan's 2026 World Cup squad despite his youth.
