Kenji Giovanni Cabrera Nakamura was born on 27 January 2003 in Shiga, Japan, to a Peruvian father and Japanese mother, and moved to Peru at a young age. He developed through local football and the FBC Melgar environment, where his acceleration and left-sided attacking instincts quickly stood out.
At Melgar he became one of Liga 1's most productive young wide players, contributing goals, assists and ball-carrying from the left. His performances brought youth international attention and eventually senior national-team interest, marking him as one of Peru's few young attackers with genuine export value.
In July 2025 Vancouver Whitecaps signed him from Melgar as a U22 Initiative player, giving him an MLS platform through 2028 with an option year. By 2026 he was competing for minutes in Vancouver's attacking group, used as a left winger or attacking midfielder.
For Peru he represented the under-20 team and moved into the senior pool during the 2026 cycle. His call-ups reflect a desire to add speed and one-versus-one threat to a side that had struggled for goals in qualifying.
At around 1.74 m, Cabrera is a right-footed or two-footed-leaning attacker most comfortable driving from the left half-space. His directness and low centre of gravity invite comparisons with Bryan Reyna, while his development as an MLS winger could follow a path similar to younger South American wide players who used the league as a finishing school.
