Leroy Sané was born on 11 January 1996 in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He came through the youth academy of Schalke 04 and made his Bundesliga debut for the club in 2014 before a summer 2016 move to Manchester City for around £37 million, beginning his rise to international prominence under Pep Guardiola.
At Manchester City he became one of the Premier League's most electrifying wide attackers, contributing regularly in assists and goals across three domestic seasons and winning back-to-back Premier League titles in 2018 and 2019. A serious knee injury against Liverpool in the 2019 Community Shield disrupted his 2019-20 season, and in summer 2020 Bayern Munich signed him for around €45 million.
At Bayern he won multiple Bundesliga titles and DFB-Pokal trophies, as well as reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2020-21. His time at Bayern was marked by periods of high individual output alongside concerns about consistency, with fluctuating form making him a polarising figure in German football discussion. In summer 2025 he joined Galatasaray on a free transfer, seeking a new challenge and regular playing time at a different high-profile club.
For Germany he debuted in 2015 and was a key attacking figure through the 2017 Confederations Cup triumph, the 2018 World Cup — where his controversial omission from the squad was a major story — and the 2020 UEFA European Championship. He was part of the squad for the 2024 home European Championship and remains part of Germany's attacking consideration heading toward 2026.
Standing 1.83 m, Sané is a left-footed winger whose explosive acceleration, close control and ability to cut inside onto his stronger foot from the right side place him in the elite of European wide attackers of his generation. His combination of pace and technical quality draw direct comparisons with a younger Arjen Robben or a more complete version of Robben's wide-left counterpart.
