Mathew David Ryan was born on 8 April 1992 in Plumpton, New South Wales, and developed as a goalkeeper with Blacktown City and Central Coast Mariners. His early A-League performances were mature beyond his age, and he quickly became one of Australia's most promising exports.
Ryan's European career took him through Club Brugge, Valencia, Genk, Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, Real Sociedad, Copenhagen, AZ and Roma before he later joined Levante. He won league and cup honours, played in the Premier League and La Liga, and built a reputation as a goalkeeper willing to test himself in different football cultures.
By May 2026 he was with Levante and remained Australia's senior captain and most established goalkeeper. Even as younger keepers such as Joe Gauci, Paul Izzo and Patrick Beach pushed around the squad, Ryan's experience and leadership kept him central to tournament planning.
For Australia he debuted in 2012 and has been the defining Socceroos goalkeeper of his era. He played at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, won the 2015 AFC Asian Cup on home soil, and captained the national team through the 2026 qualifying cycle.
Standing about 1.84 m, Ryan is a right-footed goalkeeper known for reactions, distribution and bravery playing behind a high line despite not being the tallest keeper. His career has naturally drawn comparison with Mark Schwarzer, though Ryan's footwork and modern build-up role are more central to his identity.
