Santiago Andrés Mele Castañero was born on 6 September 1997 in Montevideo. Fénix developed him as a goalkeeper with reach, spring and the confidence to grow into senior responsibility.
His club path moved through Osmanlıspor, Lleida, Plaza Colonia and Unión de Santa Fe. A strong Junior spell in Colombia lifted his profile before Monterrey brought him to Liga MX in 2025.
By May 2026 he was competing at Monterrey, a club where foreign goalkeepers are judged quickly. He offers shot-stopping, aerial reach and a practical build-up game.
For Uruguay he moved through youth teams and entered the senior pool after the long Fernando Muslera era. With Sergio Rochet established, Mele provides depth and competition through the 2026 cycle.
Around 1.85 m and right-footed, Mele is reactive and mobile rather than simply huge. He resembles a more agile Martín Campaña with modern distribution habits.
