Al Okhdood was founded in 1976 in Najran, a city in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. The club's name carries cultural and religious significance, drawing its identity from the People of the Ditch — a story recounted in the Qur'an — giving the club a sense of rootedness in the history and heritage of the region it represents.
For much of their existence, Al Okhdood competed in the lower tiers of Saudi football. Their most notable early achievement came in the 1991–92 season when they won the Saudi Second Division, earning promotion up the pyramid. The club also claimed the Saudi Third Division title twice, in 2003–04 and 2017–18, before again winning the Saudi Second Division in 2020–21 — a triumph that set the stage for their most historic moment.
On 15 May 2023, Al Okhdood secured promotion to the Saudi Professional League for the first time in the club's history, becoming the 37th club ever to compete in the top tier of Saudi football. The promotion was confirmed with three matchdays to spare, marking a watershed moment for a club that had spent decades building toward this point from the country's southern periphery.
Beyond football, the club encompasses a broad range of sports departments including karate, handball, taekwondo, volleyball, water polo, basketball, and cycling — reflecting its ambition to serve as a broad sporting institution for the Najran community. As a club representing one of Saudi Arabia's more geographically distinct regions, Al Okhdood carries the identity of the south with pride.
