The Bhutan women's national football team made its international debut comparatively late, playing its first match in 2010. The team is governed by the Bhutan Football Federation, a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), and plays its home fixtures at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu.
Before entering international competition, women's football in Bhutan had no formal club structure. A domestic competition organised by the Bhutan Football Federation — supported by FIFA funding — was established specifically to build interest and identify talent, with teams representing individual Dzongkhags rather than clubs. This groundwork paved the way for the first national squad.
The team's competitive debut came in December 2010 with a friendly against Bangladesh, followed immediately by the inaugural SAFF Women's Championship. Those early results were difficult: an 18–0 defeat to India and a 9–0 loss to Bangladesh in the group stage, before a 1–1 draw with Sri Lanka provided the first goal and point in the team's history. The side withdrew from international football for the next two years before returning for the 2012 SAFF Women's Championship, where a squad made up entirely of students travelled to Bangkok for warm-weather preparation before competing in Sri Lanka.
The team's record win, a 13–0 victory over the Maldives, came in October 2024, marking a significant milestone. Competitive appearances have been concentrated in the SAFF Women's Championship and AFC Women's Asian Cup qualification, and the side continues to develop within the South Asian regional footballing framework.
