Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo traces its roots to 1935, when Toshiba Horikawa-cho Soccer Club was founded in Kawasaki, Kanagawa. After decades competing as a corporate side, the club relocated to Sapporo on the northern island of Hokkaido in 1996, rebranding as Consadole Sapporo and beginning life in the Japan Football League. The name itself captures the club's identity: "Consadole" blends "dosanko" — the word for people of Hokkaido — reversed, with the spirited Spanish exclamation "olé."
Promotion to the J.League came swiftly after winning the JFL championship in 1997, though the club's early top-flight years were turbulent. Sapporo became the first club ever relegated from the J.League, and cycled between divisions through the 2000s. A second-tier title in 2000 under Takeshi Okada brought a return to J1, but financial strain repeatedly tested the club's stability. Patience paid off when Sapporo claimed the J2 championship again in 2007 and, most significantly, in 2016 — earning promotion ahead of a sustained seven-year spell in the top flight.
The 2018 season stands as the high-water mark in Sapporo, with the club finishing fourth in J1, matching a placement achieved back in the Kawasaki era. The club plays in red and black stripes, a palette inherited from the Toshiba era and inspired by A.C. Milan, which has become a symbol of Hokkaido sporting identity. Their main home, the indoor Sapporo Dome, gave the club a distinctive atmosphere. After relegation at the end of 2024, Consadole compete in the J2 League, aiming once again for a return to the top flight.
