Niger Tornadoes Football Club is based in Minna, in Niger State, north-central Nigeria. Although the exact founding date is not widely documented, the club has been a fixture in Nigerian football for decades, competing across multiple tiers of the domestic game and earning a reputation as one of the more resilient clubs from the region.
The club's most celebrated moment came in 2000, when they won the Nigerian FA Cup — the trophy that remains the centrepiece of their honours list. That victory also earned them a place in continental competition, and in 2001 they reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Cup Winners' Cup, marking their deepest run in African club football to date. The WAFU Club Championship saw a similar quarter-final exit in 2010, underlining a pattern of competitive but ultimately short continental campaigns.
Domestically, Niger Tornadoes have navigated the promotions and relegations that define life outside Nigeria's elite. They won the National Second Division in 1996 and again in 2015, the latter earning them promotion back to the top flight — the Nigerian Professional Football League — under coach Abdullahi Biffo. Their 2017 FA Cup final run, where they finished runners-up after a penalty shootout loss to Akwa United, showed the club could still compete on the biggest domestic stages.
Home matches are played at Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna, with Confluence Stadium in Lokoja serving as an occasional alternative venue. Financial pressures, including reported salary disputes, have at times tested the club's stability, but Niger Tornadoes continue to represent Minna and Niger State in Nigerian professional football.
